I moved to the US from Dubai in August of 2015 to pursue my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at UMass Amherst. In the four years that I spent at UMass, I was involved with academic research, engineering projects, as well as community-related events.
In the first semester of my freshman year, I got involved with research work in the Fluid-Structure Interactions lab and worked in the FSI lab until I graduated from UMass. In my junior year, I volunteered with the SuperMileage Vehicle (SMV) team and became the team captain in my senior year. As a member of the SMV team, I learned to lead and work within a team of skilled engineers with a unified goal of building a vehicle that would compete in the internationalSAE competition.
For my senior capstone project, I teamed up with three other mechanical engineering students to design and build a heavy duty gripper that senior citizens could use to grab objects that are both heavy and out of reach. This project was very rewarding at the end when we were able to deliver a working device to the elderly woman it was intended for.
